There’s something about a desert sunrise.
Before the day gets busy, before the heat settles in, before the lists and errands and all the things begin, the sky out here can turn the most incredible shades of copper, gold, dusty pink and lavender.
It changes quickly. If you aren’t paying attention, you can miss it.
Copper Sky Bakehouse was born from that feeling.
Not just the colors of a California desert morning, but the reminder to slow down long enough to notice the good stuff.
More Than a Loaf of Bread
If you’ve found your way here because of my sourdough, welcome. Bread is certainly a big part of what happens around here.
There’s usually flour on the counter, starter doing its thing somewhere in the kitchen, and at least one loaf in some stage of becoming something delicious.
But somewhere along the way, I realized Copper Sky was becoming about more than bread.
It was becoming about home.
About making things with our hands.
About food that takes a little longer because sometimes the things worth having shouldn’t be rushed.
About gathering around a table, pouring another cup of coffee, feeding people we love, creating things simply because they bring us joy, and finding beauty in ordinary days.
And yes, occasionally it’s also about eating an unreasonable amount of warm sourdough with butter.
Balance.
Made by Hand, Meant to Be Shared
I’ve always loved creating.
Sometimes that means baking a loaf of sourdough. Sometimes it’s cookies, something sweet from the pantry, embroidery, sewing, or dreaming up whatever project has caught my attention this week.
Copper Sky gives all of those pieces somewhere to belong.
The Bakery is where you’ll find the breads and baked goods coming out of my kitchen.
The Pantry is a growing collection of the little extras that belong beside them.
The Mercantile is where baking meets my other love—making things by hand—along with a growing collection of fun Copper Sky apparel and goods.
And eventually, Workshops will give us a chance to actually gather around the table together, learn something new, make a mess, laugh a lot and go home having created something with our own two hands.
This little corner of the internet—the Copper Journal—will be where I share some of what happens in between.
Recipes. Sourdough. Things I’m learning. Behind-the-scenes moments from the Bakehouse. Seasonal inspiration. Handmade projects. Maybe the occasional kitchen disaster, because we’re not pretending those don’t happen.
And probably a little everyday life mixed in, too.
Slowly, Thoughtfully, Imperfectly
I’m building Copper Sky much the same way I make most things:
A little at a time.
There will always be another recipe I want to try, another product I want to create, another idea scribbled somewhere that I swear I’m going to remember later.
This website will grow.
The Bakehouse will grow.
I’ll grow right along with it.
And I’m okay with that.
I don’t want Copper Sky to feel like some perfectly polished place where everything is always styled, scheduled and Instagram-ready.
I want it to feel real.
Warm bread cooling on the counter.
Coffee in your favorite mug.
Crumbs on the cutting board.
Lavender on the table.
Something handmade nearby.
Music playing in the background.
And enough room to pull up another chair.
So, Welcome.
Whether you’ve been buying bread from me for a while, stumbled across Copper Sky through a friend, came looking for something handmade, or somehow ended up here because the internet knows you have a carb problem…
I’m glad you found your way to my little corner of the desert.
Take a look around. Check back often. There will always be something new happening around here.
Because Copper Sky isn’t really about doing everything perfectly.
It’s about making good things, sharing them with good people, and remembering that sometimes the simplest things—a warm loaf of bread, a cup of coffee, something made by hand, or a seat at the table—are the things that make a place feel like home.
So pull up a chair.
There’s always room at the table.
With love,
Dawn
